Re: singlespeed
Finally, someone else seeing sense
Keep checking STW as Inbreds etc regularly come up.
How much you looking to spend?
You after suss or rigid forks?

Re: singlespeed
What about this, brand new for £299. Has hyd disc brakes. Replace the steel forks with some carbon ones which you should be ablet pick up for around £100:

Iain had one so he should be able to tell you what they're like.

Thats a bargain mate, although you'll def need to change the forks which you will be able to pick up on STW. The brakes aren't grate either as the pistons are only on one side and their not very strong. You could pick some 2nd hand deores up whcih are much better. With your changes and the cost of the bike you'll be looking at £400-£450 which is pretty good and it is light with the added flexibility of it being steel

Re: singlespeed
Dude what you need is a double speed:
Get yoursef a singlepeed kit from any web shop, 16T sprocket preferred.
Strip all your rear deraillieur, cassette and cabling.
Fit the singlespeed spacers and cog, making sure that it's inline with the middle chainring
Shorten the chain to fit round middle chainring and the singlespeed cog
Fit short cage mech from old racing bike or buy one with the kit
Replace the bottom stop (for 9th speed) screw with M4 x 25 screw. Using this screw, adjust the mech so it's in line with the chain
Job done
When the going gets a bit too slow, you can drop into granny ring cos you left the front mech. on - sorted
Total cost £30
Of course you do need a hardtail to start with
Advantages: you don't need to splash out on a dedicated SS bike, you can convert it back to hardtail when the spring comes.
Disadvantages: normal chain not very strong so might be better of fitting BMX version. Chainset teeth aren't full height which may cause chain slippage and gentleman's area/headset interface Jockey wheels squeak like hell after 30 mins - I'm hoping that packing the jockey wheels with grease will cure this

Yeah yeah yeah......you all go back to geared bikes in the end. Seen it flashing in the pan before and before that and before that!!!!!
Still if it makes you happy do it.
