Singlespeed conversion
Finally getting round to turning the explosif into a singlespeed. Couple of questions:
- planning on getting the Gusset 1er cog and spacer - any tips on tensioners that work well?
- seems a 1/8" chain is the thing to get for strength - does this work ok with a regular chainring or do I need a special one?
Any help much appreciated,
Steve

Re: Singlespeed conversion
I’m presuming your Explosif doesn’t have the sliding dropouts?
If your just wanting to try it out you could use an old rear mech to tension the chain – (have an old Deore one you can have)
You could then use your existing chain (shortened obviously) and chainring.
I have always used 1/8 chain and chainring but as I’ve had horizontal or sliding dropouts never needed to use a tensioner. Bullet proof.
The only exception was on an old Kona I built. Used the On-one doofer which was fine.
Whatever tensioner you use check what chain it can be used with.
IIRC the doofer doesn’t work with a 9 speed, think I ended up using an 8 speed.
If you want a 1/8 chainring Goldtech do one for about £25 which you can just attach to your existing crank arms.

Re: Singlespeed conversion
Jase,
You're a star - that's just what I needed. I've found a Goldtech ring for £20 will go for that. I'm a heavy rider so need all the strength I can get!
Cheers,
Steve

For all things single speed look on Charlie the Bikemongers website! I used his tensioners he sells on there with my Scott scale 40 to great effect!
