Re: Rough Ride
Done the Rough Ride the last two years, think I'll give it a miss this year. If you have never done it before its a tough old ride, go for the long distance - make a day of it
You dont have to decide on your choice of distace untill you get to the split point, if you miss the cut of time you will be doing the short route any way! Also its not a timed ride but you do get a tee shirt and it is a good atmosphere at the camp site, more laid back than Merida's, take a BBQ and enjoy

Re: Rough Ride
Signed up already - looking forward to it. I've got my mind set on the long route - legs will have the final say.
Re: Rough Ride
Just checked it out, V.interested. Will check with my social secretary (wifey) when I get home.
75km - 46miles. Hmmmm I have done 30miles + regularly and that's OK, have the HONC in April and will do the 50Km route. Think I'll go with Pete's approach, mentally 75km but let my legs make the final decision on the day.
Cool.

Re: Rough Ride
Right, the wife has sanctioned a leave pass but it might cost me a spa day so I DEFO be doing the 75km ride even if I need Red Bull by intraveinus and painkilling Volturol suppositories. C'mon it'll be a good challenge !
I think I can travel there/back on the day as I am based in Birmingham but I might throw up tent the night before. Anyone thinking of camping?

Re: Rough Ride
Hmmm in Hereford.
Hey does that mean we have to wear black tape over our eyes incase we have our photo's taken?

Re: Rough Ride
Yep, black tape over our eyes and matt black or olive drab bikes. Oh and if you're 'taking out' a slower rider you can't shout 'Passing on the right/left' you just have to sneak up let their tyres down without them knowing. Oh oh and big knives are mandatory. Oh oh oh and you have to have a scary face and 3 days stubble. Oh oh oh oh and we can't talk about it. Oh oh oh oh oh and the entire Chris Ryan/Andy McNab back catalogue is essential preparation . One last thing ..... it's not an event it's operation 'Rough Ride'.

Re: Rough Ride
Well having read pretty the whole works of Andy McNab and about a third of Chris Ryan's I reckon we'd do pretty well. Especially as I watched Ultimate Force on ITV4 last night and The Unit on Bravo sometime last week, oh and of course there's the Special Ops guy on the Castaway Exposed program. He's cool and makes a lot of sense so I make notes.
Might have to brush up on my weapons knowledge though just in case we have to make some small talk. Just remember that the AK47 is a very useful weapon and should only be fired in 4 round bursts else the enemy will know you're a muppet becuase by then you'll be firing into the sky. There're rifles not guns and the bits that come out of the end and nearly kill you and but quite (if you're McNab or Ryan) are bullets but the whole thing with the bullet still attached is a round, not to be confused with 6 pints of Stella - schoolboy stuff but it'll trip you up. Oh oh and if you're caught in the toilets and have to under go some stressful interrogation - about your bike, the tyres you'll be running on operation 'Rough Ride' and how light the whole thing is then just repeat your name, cyclone membership number and nothing else. Imagine building a house in your head, brick by brick, nail by nail. Oh oh oh but not NcNabs house as he's a cr@p builder go for Ryan's it's a much better mental place.
Oh and don't let your mates down.

Re: Rough Ride
Can't say all members of Cyclone engaged in operation 'Rough Ride' must remain anonnymoose. I hope you used a cover name when you enlisted.
Shhh walls have ears.
We're gonna have to get a group photo on the day wearing black eye tape.
