Busted Freehub

Post  MKSteve on 2008-08-18, 21:03

Boo!

My freewheel (or freehub?) is shot. It's terminal, and the shop say that as the wheel is so old (it's still the original,12 year old one!) , they can no longer get the parts, and a new wheel is needed. Crying or Very sad

So, what do I do. Shop reckon new wheels start at £40, but they can build me a custom, lighter one, from about £70 upwards.

Should I just sling on a basic, ie heavy, one and save the cash, or would it be worth my while spending a little more, or maybe even treating myself to a pair like this:

Would they even fit my old steed?

To be honest, as money is tight, I'm currently thinking of getting the cheapest possible replacement and putting and spare cash towards the new bike fund

If you want good hand built wheels check out Merlin cycles who are renowned for their quality.

You can pick up sets from about £60.

Ok, I think I've decided to go for a custom build from Merlin.

LX hub
Mavic XM317 rim
ACI stainless steel double butted spokes

£45 for the rear.

What's everyone think?

The rim seems to be one of the lighter ones available from Merlin, and I've chosen to upgrade to an LX hub.

Hopefully order this today, and be back on the bike next weekend Very Happy

£45 seems like a good price for a rear wheel to me.
I've got a rear wheel from my old Scott which ur welcome to, but its Disc only and think yer bike is rim brakes innit ?

You might want to confirm how long Merlin will take to build your wheel, They get quite busy , and I think there's only one guy who builds em.
I had my rims built up with Hope hubs when I ordered my bike, and it added a week or so to the delivery.

ps I'm well happy with the build quality and trueness of my Merlin built Hope/Mavics
