Back Wood Topography

Hi all, I am in the process of arranging to meet the people responsible for the Back Wood area, especially the gully that leads down to the little bridge over the stream. Does anyone know how I can get a topographical outline of the area? I have Memory Map but cannot get the area in question to a large enough point that scribbling over it would be legible. All help would be greatfully received.

Dude,

All I can think of is:

1. In MemoryMap set your screen scale so that when you print it out it's useable then carefully line up the gridlines and print a page. Then move your map over a bit more (line up the gridlines) and print the next section. You'll end up with a few sheets of A4 but it's a cheap idea.

2. The not so cheap idea is to order an OS map to the relevant scale and set the woods as the centre. If you get the waterproofed one you might be able to scribble on it using a wipeable pen (not permanent).

Personally I'd go for option 1 then in MemoryMap go to Map, Print, Print Area in Window and print to Windows Imager then dump the images into MS Word and save it for future use. A bit of sellotape and a guillotine and voilla.

If you are using Memory2004 (I can't open 2005 files) and need some help then draw a track around the area you need and email me the overlay. I'll import it and bang out the images in MS Word or Adobe.

Terry, I have 1:50K on Mem Map 04 and 05 versions.

I can get you a detailed .jpg of the area if that will help.

Nath, I think the problem is printing it out to a useable size. That's why I suggested doing it to a good scale over several sheets of A4. We need someone with a big printer... or Rolf Harris. Laughing

Hey Craig and Nath, If I could get an A4 sized copy of the back wood area, that would be fine. I jave an A4 to A3 function on my copier so could blow it up. I have printed out maps with Mem-Map before (think I have the 04 version) and know how to adjust the scale, but the Back Wood area is just so small the resolution goes when its enlarged. I,ll try the options you guys have been good enough to outline and let you know how I got on tomorrow. I just dont want to go wandering around with a clinometer if I can help it!!

I'm guessing the time has passed, but I can do you a detailed scan from 1:25000 map if u are still looking.

Rob, have run into a few issues with plans for this area, so at the moment everything is on hold. The land in Back Wood isnt managed by the Greensand Trust, it is administered/managed by Bidwells in Northampton. Any approach to develop areas in the wood have to go through them and according to the local Trust rangers, there is very little enthusiasm to develop the area, which is a shame as there are loads of unofficial trails from the top of the dell (hope thats the word) down to the little wooden bridge at the bottom. Once i get my backside in gear I will be meeting up with one of the rangers to sound him out. A new baby has also impacted a lttile bit on my freetime!!! Thanks for the offer though, see you on the trails sometime eh.

For everyone who has helped me on this subject thanks a lot. Having spoken with a couple of the guys at GST there is little/no chance of anything being developed in the area, especially as another jump park near Stone Lane at Stockgrove is being put together. Thanks anyway, looks like we,ll continue to share with the horsey folk.
