When going up some of the steeper climbs up at the woods, I'm finding myself spinning uncomfortably fast in the granny ring, but concerned about chain suck if I then shift to a smaller a cog on the back.

I guess I'm more comfortable pushing a bit of a higher gear than the granny ring allows, but the middle ring on the front is just a bit too big at times.

I was thinking about swapping to a 26T granny ring, instead of the standard 22T, to narrow the gap between granny & middle.

Have any of you folks tried this before? How did you find it?

If you are shifting down the block...I.E from easy gear to harder gear, you shouldn't have to worry as you have less chance of getting chain suck as you're taking the chain away from the rear stay.....therefore less chance of getting the chain sucked up

Also, if your upper and lower limits are set correctly, cause of chain suck has got absolutely nothing to do with moving through the gears, itd just more likely to occur in front granny as the chain is at its smallest diameter (closest to the rear stay). Chain suck is caused by worn rings, lack of lube or stiff chain links.

Game On ! Very Happy

Thanks Nath

Persevered with the setup today, shifted to a smaller cog on the back with no trouble so will stick with it.

Phil,

Really pleased you managed to get the bike sorted without any cost or agro. Those bottom pivots are so easily overlooked. Welcome to the world of full suss. So much more to keep an eye on cyclops

Here's a pic of my Giant, similar to yours. It really was a superb bike.
