I know theres a few runners in the club. Does it get any less painful on the legs and hips? Ive managed to run 4 miles feel like I can go futher as Im not blowing out of my arse breathing wise but have to stop due to pain in my knees and hips. Ive got a nice new springy pair of trainers _________________ The person that "looks" like they know what they are doing on a bike

| When you say new trainers did you go to a running shop and have them analyse your running style to check whether you pronate etc?
This is essential as the top of the range Air Max from JD Sports may look the part on da street but won't cut it for running.
If you've only just started then you will experience aches and pains for a few days afterwards but it will get easier. I had trouble walking the day after my first run!
Try varying your pace during a run as this helps prevent injury and spend some time after each run stretching. You probably know that as a cyclist you'll probably have short hamstrings (as your legs never really fully extend when cycling) so may have trouble touching your toes! |

| | Daz, do you stretch before and after (and during if you arent after a time)? It does get easier, its normally a combination of lactic acid build-up and pounding the ground that causes the aches; each stride hits the ground at something like 3 g,s. Always found rubbing tiger balm or ralgex into the legs helped too, well it did for rugby. |

| Thanks for the answers, I think its just down to getting used to it I went out on monday it didn't feel partiularly comfortable while running but once I had stopped it didn't hurt, after the first two runs I felt like I had been beaten up I think I do need to lose a bit of weight some of the pain is the manboobs and belly bouncing up and down
I can touch my toes I started doing yoga regular a few months ago _________________ The person that "looks" like they know what they are doing on a bike

| Dude,
Everyones got a valid point - especially gait analysis but I'd say that wasn't an issue over 4 miles.
You'll obviously incurr some 'beating up' as you get used to running especially if you're heavy but I suspect that your running style leaves a lot to be desired. If you're not breathing outta ya ass then you may be plodding along like a hippo which bangs through your joints whereas running a bit faster and lighter footed means that your feet spend less time on the floor and the impact is minimised.
Google running styles and see what it turns up. There's some great visualisaton techniques out there. I know that I have to constantly check my running form especially over the longer distances when I get tired or my mind wanders off. |

| Maybe your just not made for running!, no actually a lot of people have leg bones that curve slightly inward or outward from the hip, and its not until they run 4 miles + that the condition shows up.
No matter how much you listen to the bull~@it from the pretty girl selling 'running' trainers, the condition will always be painfull. |
