| Andy,
Have mislaid your phone number, otherwise I'd ring you (my mobile is in someone else's car).
Could I ask a favour of you? Can I borrow your fork-fitting tools over the weekend please? Ideally, if you've got them, I'd like the whole she-bang: - star nut tool - crown race jammer-on-er - headset press (if you have one, not too important if you don't as the cups don't _strictly_ need replacing). - headset cup remover (again, if you have one) - hacksaw, saw guide - if you have them.. I have a small one (and a junior saw - boom boom!) - penis pump
Whatever you've got really! In return I'll ply you with beer.
Cheers buddy, Tom (now the proud owner of some Reba SLs). |

| Remember, measure TWICE, cut once!
I've called Corleys/Roy Pinks to pre-warn them that someone will be in over the weekend with forks/star fangle nut/crown race etc in hand!
No that I’m doubting your ability of course!!!
I’ve been there last year:
Tried to fit the crown race (admittedly I didn’t have the correct tool). Took the forks/crown race to Pinks who did it in about 27 seconds!
Went home, cut the steerer (twice cos I was too cautious the first time) with a hacksaw and it looked a right mess!! Place some tape around the steerer where you’ll be cutting as this will keep the blade in the right place.
Tried to fit the SFN and after 1 hour of grunting and sweating and 1 mangled SFN I returned to Pinks. They fitted the SFN in about 24 seconds and commented that it looked like I’d chewed the end of the steerer!!! They have a cutting tool that could have done the job neat and tidy in about 23 seconds.
So I spent several hours in the garage trying to do it and several minutes and £10 in Roy Pinks – no prizes for guessing what I’d do next time!
Good luck. |

| Guys pop down to B & Q/focus/homebase go to the plumbing section and buy a pipe cutter.
You can pick one up for under a fiver and they make cutting steerer tubes a walk in the park.
Ps I own a headset press should anyone ever wish to borrow one.

Yeah... I tried one of these once before, but it seems they're more designed for squidgy copper piping, not hardened aluminium. Cutting wheel resembled a daisy before I got through the steerer tube.
Maybe I just got the wrong one though!
Anyway, have had second thoughts and think I'll get a shop to do it!

| As with all tools the better the quality the better the results.
The trick with a pipe cutter is to go slowly, little turns and take your time. |

| Gav, I might take you up on the headset press matie.
Is it a homemade job with a bit of threaded bar and a metal bar or is it a 'proper job'?
